A Basic Overview of the Ozone Layer

The Ozone layer is located in the atmosphere, (specifically the stratosphere) and is made entirely of Ozone. It occurs naturally in the atmosphere; it is thinnest near the equator, and densest near the poles. Ultra-violet, or UV, rays strike the stratosphere, thus creating the Ozone Layer. Two of the formulas for the creation of ozone are:
O + O2=O3
O + O3=O2 + O2

The amount of Ozone above a point on the Earth's surface is measured in Dobson Units, or DU's. As of 2005 the average amount of Ozone above the Earth's surface is 100 DU's.
